Packing Heat

I try to never check bags, but sometimes a large backpack or a camping stove require that I do. And though I’ve never had the problem myself, I’ve heard plenty of horror stories of gear going missing from checked bags. Jon Udell has a solution to this that I haven’t heard before (even though his post is over a year old): pack a starter pistol.

Weapons that travel MUST be in a hard case, must be declared upon check-in, and MUST BE LOCKED by a TSA official.

A "weapons" is defined as a rifle, shotgun, pistol, airgun, and STARTER PISTOL. Yes, starter pistols - those little guns that fire blanks at track and swim meets - are considered weapons…and do NOT have to be registered in any state in the United States.

Sounds risky, but if you are carrying something valuable enough, it is certainly worth it.
