I apparently missed a notable day yesterday: the 40 year anniversary of the US National Trails System. Brought about by the National Trails System Act of 1968, the trails tour through some remarkable country, and provide ample opportunity for adventure.
The two biggies in the Trail System are the Appalachian Trail and the Pacific Crest Trail. Thru-hiking either one of these two is quite a feat only accomplished by a few hundred people each year. I’ve never done either, but found myself on the Appalachian Trail in the Great Smokey Mountains around the time of early spring that thru-hikers hit the area. Everyone was on the lookout for these superstars of the backpacking world, and I felt a bit phony only being on the trail for a couple of days. Guess I’ll just have to go back and do it properly sometime.
